EP:198 The Transformational Power of Fully Experiencing Your Emotions, with Co-founder of Elevate Events, Emile Steenveld

Since 2013, millennials have seen a 47% increase in major-depression diagnoses. In a world where distractions make it frighteningly easy to avoid our emotions are so readily at our fingertips, this is not surprising.

We often have emotions or sensations that we can’t understand or classify, so we turn to distractions in an attempt to avoid feeling them altogether.

We misdiagnose simple emotions such as sadness, anger, rage, rejection as depression or anxiety disorder, so we can neatly categorize the unfamiliarity of what we are feeling rather than to actually experience, to move through it.

We are in perpetual avoidance and prefer to bury that which is uncomfortable, inconvenient or doesn’t fit into a neat little socially-constructed box.

Feeling sad? Order some Uber-Eats and eat your feelings.

Feeling lonely? Jump on Tinder and arrange a one-night-stand.

Feeling insecure? Go on Instagram, throw some filters on your selfie and watch the comments, likes and validation roll in.

Is this truly a growing depression epidemic we face, or is it a miscategorization of a generation that is doing everything they can to avoid their feelings?

Furthermore, are emotions a necessary part of our personal development that we are ignoring?

Do they hold the key to accessing deeper parts of ourselves and reaching the highest levels of our potential?

The mental health dialogue has – in recent years – been brought into the limelight as many people begin to seek more holistic approaches and consider a real need to allow uncomfortable emotions, feelings, and thoughts to surface in order to heal. To de-stigmatise experiencing negative emotions and promote the concept that in fact it is recognizing, understanding and feeling these emotions that hold the key to our personal growth and development.

We caught up with Emile Steenveld – emotional intelligence coach and speaker, co-founder of Elevate Events – in Canggu, Bali to discuss how to move through and experience uncomfortable emotions. He discusses how our emotions are the key to unlock our unlimited potential, our personal growth, our healing, our liberation from mental health issues such as depression.

Emile believes that “if we can learn to be with these feelings and thoughts and nurture them, instead of pushing them away, then we’re going to allow them to pass through us”.

He talks about avoidance of these emotions being problematic as “the moment we try to hold it/control it, it gets bigger and bigger and bigger.”

“So many of us wear these masks and we don’t even realize we are doing it,”

Emile discusses the inability he had to accept the dark parts of himself, his deeper emotions and having to put on a ‘mask’ or a ‘front’ so that people would accept him. That at face-value he would appear to have everything together, to be confident. To wear the mask of a confident ‘model’, where for so many years he had battled with such a deep, internal insecurity and need to be accepted.

He uses the analogy of a duck to describe this phenomenon of concealing emotion – on the surface, everything looks calm and fine, but underneath the water, the duck wildly paddles just to keep afloat.

While he was aware of the falsely confident “model” persona he hid behind, it was ironically his modeling career which helped him to finally remove it. It was through facing the consistent rejections a model does that Emile learned how to move through negative, unfamiliar or uncomfortable emotions. It was where he identified the limiting ‘story’ he had of himself that he was ‘not good enough’. He recognized the belief system he’d been programmed to have at a young age that was holding him back. The belief system which would cause these negative feelings, thoughts, and emotions to surface. To perpetuate the feeling of ‘not-being-good-enough’ and keep him unable to progress or grow.

Emile also came to the realization that these thoughts, feelings and emotions would always come at a time when he was about to reach the next ‘level’ of himself or in his personal development.

It was always when faced with something that was unfamiliar, challenging or foreign, something that pushed him out of his comfort zone, that these emotions would surface. They would bring up elements of his “story” – his story that he needed approval, that he wasn’t good enough, that he needed to be validated.

In fact, many figures in the personal development world talk extensively about these phenomena of ‘uplevelling’ and the subsequent emotional and mental challenges that come with it. Chances are, if you are coming up against emotions, feelings or sensations that are unfamiliar to you and that perpetuate your ‘story’ during a period of growth or upheaval for you, you are simply experiencing the same growing pains that Emile was.

You are being forced to address your ‘story’, your belief systems and the underlying emotions that are causing it to play out continuously. You are about to call yourself out on the BS and uplevel.

So what do you do when these emotions and feelings come up? How do you move through them gracefully, remaining relatively sane and mostly unscathed? Furthermore, how do you use these emotions to actually assist in your personal growth and reach the next level?

The process for moving through these emotions is relatively simple, according to Emile.
    Recognize Your Story

Emile believes the first step is to reflect on what your story is. What is the story you’ve held that reveals how you perceive yourself – your identity, your emotions, your role in this life? For example, your story (like Emile and also a surprisingly large number of people in this world) might be “I am not good enough.” Your story might be “I need the approval of others because I am inadequate.” Perhaps your story is “I have to be perfect or nobody will accept me.” Figure out what your story is. Write a list of all of the emotions that someone with that story would feel. Recognize where these emotions are surfacing in your life.

    Catch Your Thoughts + Feelings

Once you’ve recognized your story, the trick is to catch it playing out through your thoughts. This means listening to, distancing yourself from and observing your thoughts (hint: mindfulness meditations are a great way to master this habit). The more often you practice this, the more automatic and easier it will be for you to do. Notice any time you are thinking thoughts that equate to “I am not good enough”, “I need validation” etc. Notice how your thoughts breed emotions or feelings that equate to the thoughts. Notice how it feels to think these thoughts. Observe the emotions that are coming up when these thoughts surface. Allow them to actually surface and move through you – use them to figure out what the genesis or believe underlying these emotions is.

Choose A Different Thought Or Action

In order to grow and develop past your limited thoughts and beliefs, you need to choose a more empowering thought, belief or action that supersedes it. Calling yourself out and recognizing the thoughts, emotions or self-sabotaging behaviors is the first step, and reprogramming yourself through repetition is the next. Once you have recognized the thought, feeling or emotion and expressed it fully (allowed it to move through you) then it is time to choose a better thought, feeling or action. The more you consciously choose a new thought, action, emotion or idea for yourself, the more you will make it a habit. The more you will program your next-level or identity that is without the ‘story’ you started out with.

If you are looking to reconnect with yourself and reach your highest potential then Emile invites you to join the Reset Retreat in Bali for New Years 2019. This transformative experience will help you to develop an authentic expression of your emotions and to surpass the stories and beliefs that hold you back.

EP:197 Bio-hack your way to mental and physical evolution, with physique transformation specialist,Kris Gethin

For many, exercise is an activity that you embark on to improve your physical appearance. Most people hit the gym when they notice their clothes fitting a little tighter, or before a beach vacation.  The interesting shift here is that more and more people are becoming motivated to exercise because of health benefits.  People are wanting to feel good, not just look good. In reality, only when we feel good are we able to look good too.

    Enter “Biohacking”

Biohacking is a recent buzzword that has hit mainstream media. Biohacking refers to the science of altering aspects within your body and environment so you can take full charge of your biology. Simply put, Biohacks are techniques that help you to figure out what your body needs to perform optimally so that you feel energized, productive and overall be the best version of yourself.

Jules Schroeder got a hold of Kris Gethin to shine more light on the important factors to take into account when you embark on the journey to healthy eating and physical activity and ultimately live your best life!

Kris is an internationally renowned physique transformation specialist, founder of the DP training method and a spokesmodel for bodybuilding.com. He is the author of the book Man of Iron and also the cofounder of Gethin gyms.  Kris’ expertise in this field makes him a perfect fit to discuss with us the facts associated with exercise and healthy eating.

    Step 1 – Clean eating

What you fuel your body with has an ENORMOUS impact on how you feel. Just as putting the wrong fuel into your car will damage its engine, eating food filled with GMO’s, artificial flavoring, high sugar and meat with antibiotics will leave you feeling lethargic.  Kris says, “ good food will ensure that you have friendly bacteria to boost your immune system.” Organic foods contain prebiotic and probiotic substances which are substances that help the body to build and maintain healthy bacteria. These friendly bacteria aid the body with digestion, inflammation, and support gut health, an imbalance of this bacteria could make you feel lethargic, angry or anxious ”

Eating healthy wholesome food that is local, organic and free-range builds a solid foundation for a high-performance lifestyle.  In the beginning, sayin’ no to that bag of chips, ice cream or whatever your junk food kryptonite is hard but trust that the process will become more effortless and simply apart of your daily routine.

Step 2 – Individualize your routine

Find a routine that works for YOU. Maybe you like to work- out first thing in the morning or meal prep on a specific day. A routine that works well for a friend or influencer doesn’t mean it will work for you. So this will take some digging and trial and error to discover how you can make this lifestyle change fit your schedule.

Kris advises that you should observe certain aspects of daily routine to make sure your body is getting what it needs to thrive. His clients receive full body check-ups so that they can understand what is happening under the surface. For instance, you might assume that taking a specific supplement will have a positive effect when in reality it could be the cause of the inflammation present in your liver, say’s Kris. In such a case the liver becomes overworked because it cannot process the supplements. This can easily be avoided by a simple checkup and pretesting, which may include blood tests, food sensitivity tests, and routine check-ups with your medical or holistic Doctor.

Step 3 – Reconnect with Nature

Do your cardio outside where you will get the chance to be in the sunshine and reconnect with the earth. Leave your phone at home. Simply go outside and listen to the sound of your breath, your feet, your body.

When you take this intentional space for yourself, free from social distractions, you give yourself space to “hear your own voice.” You will notice that you become more present in conversations, in training, and your creative ideas in your business.

Once you have mastered the 3 steps above and are wanting to be a Biohacking Ninja you can check out these additional Bio-hacking practices that are apart of Kris’s daily routine.

    • Ice baths
    • Gym Training
    • Intermittent fasting
    • Drinking Myotoxin free coffee
    • Laying on the Bio Balance matt
    • Red light therapy
    • And of course, working from his desktop treadmill.

  • EP:196 How to Deliver a Successful Business Pitch, with Sales Expert, Oren Klaff

EP:196 How to Deliver a Successful Business Pitch, with Sales Expert, Oren Klaff

Have you ever tuned in to the business reality show Shark Tank where people pitch ideas to potential investors? For people who are familiar with this hit tv show, you know it’s more or less like a real shark tank where you survive or get eaten.

Shark Tank is a platform that gives promising entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of five investors who have built fortunes in different industries. The people who make the best pitches get their ideas funded while the ideas that are not well explained, no matter how good they seem are turned down.

For this reason, it is imperative that you learn the necessary skills to deliver an engaging pitch in a limited time because let’s face it, long narratives bore people quickly.

This week, Jules Schroeder had the chance to sit down with Oren Klaff and pick his brain over pertinent issues when it comes to getting people to invest in your idea or company. Author, keynote speaker, entrepreneur, and investment banker are, among the many hats that he wears.  He is also one of the world’s leading experts on sales, raising capital, and negotiations. His book, Pitch Anything, has become a required reading throughout Silicon Valley and has sold over a million copies. Anything he touches turns to gold. For this reason, it was only necessary to have him share with us the secret to having an investor not only say “yes” to your idea but to actually pump money into it.

Oren shares with us his journey to success and practical tips on how to deliver a pitch that moves an investor to channel money to bring an idea into reality.

    1. Value yourself & your product or service

It is crucial that you value yourself and everything that you bring to the table. Oren says, “When someone detects that you’re adapting to who they need you to be, you upset them.” You cannot afford to say yes to everything that a potential investor or client says to you just to please them. Investors will not trust you with their money the moment you let outsiders dictate what you should or should not do. They might conclude that you do not know what you want because you are so easily swayable. When you have your own values, you become more compelling. That is what makes you charismatic.

    2. Observe trends in the market.

    You must understand the market that you want to tap into. Ask relevant questions and find answers first before going to an investor. These are some of the relevant questions that Oren suggests you look into;

How is the market changing? What is the buying behavior for the market? How are you going to promote the product or service? What geography are you targeting? What does your business model look like?

People love the idea of something new but the concept must still be embedded into something that has been in existence for long. You must, therefore, observe trends in the market to learn the graph and know how your new idea fits into the usual way of getting things done.

    3. Sell a concept that will create massive change

It is difficult to sell something that will have a very limited effect on the industry. You need to come up with something that will still radically change people’s lives two to three years from now. Investors see the essence of putting their money into an idea or business that creates massive change and is equally long-lasting.

You must point out ways in which your idea will alter the industry such that it will be completely different in a few years to come. Avoid unnecessary details about how your product is not like the others. Almost everything that exists in the world today has been done before. Hence, you must just find a way to communicate how your idea will change and benefit what is already in existence in the world.

    4.Invest in your idea

An investor will expect you to make a substantial contribution to your business. If you have spent very little in ensuring the visibility or running of your business it shows that you are not serious about it. If you cannot take your own company seriously, how can someone else?

Oren Klaff’s greatest point is that the same effort that goes into coming up with a business idea should also go into seeking investment. You may have one of the best ideas in the world, but the way you deliver your idea will determine whether you sink or swim.

  • EP:195 How to Become an Incredible Leader, with Keara Mascareñaz

EP:195 How to Become an Incredible Leader, with Keara Mascareñaz

As a leader, there are many different ways you can create change within your team. “Change can be made at the structural level by redesigning the way teams are organized, at the team level by refining the way collaboration happens or at the individual level by evolving personal habits and practices.”

Often leaders try to redesign the way teams are organized by delegating tasks and creating to-do lists. Asana is a great resource but before meaningful teamwork can happen, some attention needs to be given to creating a foundation of trust through positive work habits.

Our world is becoming more and more online and there is a need to shift to a more responsive and humane way of interacting as a team so people feel like they belong to something greater than just tasks on a to-do list.

This week on the unconventional life podcast is Keara Mascareñaz. Keara is the author of The New Team Habits: A Guide To The New School Rules. (Soon to be released!)  Keara helps schools and districts build and scale a culture of innovation through leadership development, team habits, and human-centered organizational design.

In this episode, Keara shares three habits from her book that build a foundation for positive, lasting changes among your team.

Increases presence and equal talk time in meetings

“Meetings are a powerful place to change the way you engage and work with each other. By shifting the way you start your meetings, you can change the tone, engagement, and ultimately culture of your meetings and your team.”

    Some sample check-in questions for the beginning of the meeting;
Where are you on a scale of one to five
    what’s occupying your mind?
What are you worried about this week
    what was your childhood nickname?
when did you get in the most trouble right?
what’s a mistake you made and what did you learn from it?

They can range from really short and fun to very deep and serious. Keara believes that if teams can consistently start meeting this way, check-ins can really enhance the level of trust and create strong bonds between people.

Talk about mistakes. Model vulnerability so that the team learns and grows together

“If you want to create a culture of learning and develop a growth mindset with your team members, you need to nurture an environment in which individuals are safe to share both learnings and failures.”

Keara shares that the first step to creating a culture of safety is being willing to make yourself vulnerable to others. It is important for the leader or role of authority to admit their own mistakes as a way to signal to others that they are also learning and that mistakes are not bad, but simply opportunities for improvement.

    “Learning expands to include;
    ✔️Curiosity
    ✔️Questions
    ✔️Mistakes
    ✔️Feedback
    ✔️Reflection
    ✔️Discussion”

    Kick-off work
Increase clarity on purpose and roles so that the team is more agile in adjusting our plans to meet the collective purpose.

“A team’s mission is like its north star, it’s the direction everybody will march even if there isn’t
a guarantee the team will reach it: Vasco de Gama circumnavigating the globe, Lewis and Clark
reaching the Pacific, or Elon Musk colonizing Mars. A mission is useless if its members don’t
understand why it’s important or what their role is on it.”

Kicking off a project requires each individual to have clear expectations of their role and purpose so each team member is rowing the boat in the same direction.

If you loved these 3 tips on how to step up your team leadership and improve your team dynamics then check out the book,The New Team Habits: A Guide To The New School Rules  The book is packed with detailed explanations of each habit, a workbook with reflective exercises for your to guide your team through, reflections and other great articles and TED talks that exploring team dynamics, its definitely a recommended read!
