Ep339: Finding Life’s Balance and Building Purposeful Businesses with Lokai Founder Steven Izen
December 26, 2022
“Stay humble when you’re on top of the world, and stay hopeful when you are feeling at your lowest.” – Steven Izen
Many entrepreneurs relate to having extreme highs and lows in their businesses. Steven Izen has experienced the same in his personal life. He started looking for the balance between the two when he first realized that this was a constant theme in an adult’s life. At 19, he had just been accepted to college when his grandfather, with whom he had a close relationship, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. What ought to have been a happy time in his life turned out to be a very sad one.
As he was experiencing all these extreme emotions, Steven realized that it was a universal feeling and that everyone goes through the same thing at different points in their lives. He thought, what if there was a product you could wear that would constantly remind you to find balance? The idea for Lokai was born. The beads in Lokai bracelets are infused with water from the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest, and mud from the lowest point, the Dead Sea.
He started Lokai right out of college and has since sold over 10 million bracelets and donated over 9 million dollars to charity. 10% of the proceeds from each bracelet sale are donated to worthwhile causes. The brand has always been about consciousness, awareness, and sustainability. Steven shares with us key lessons for finding stability in a culture that feels chaotic and explains why staying humble at your highs and hopeful at your lows is crucial for success in your business, health, relationships, and personal development:
Keep the fire burning. Without passion and a defined purpose, it is difficult to keep a venture going over time. These two serve as directions and are helpful for moments when you are feeling unsure or lost.
Prioritize things that fill your cup. It is different for everyone, but for Steven, it is spending time with his family, friends, working out, and improving his business. Not knowing how to balance your personal life with your business can easily lead to burn out and can affect not just personal relationshipsl, but also at the workplace.
Never cut corners. Transparency and honesty in all the ingredients and materials used for his brands are always disclosed, because he believes that the customers must be given the decision-making power.
Remain authentic. With Google and the availability of information online, it’s easy to start businesses, even ones you’re not serious about. Having a vision and maintaining your integrity instead of existing just to generate money is imperative, as it is usually the core of any brand.
Have empathy and practice gratitude. One of the pillars of his businesses is sustainability. He ensures that this is upheld in every step of the process because he is conscious of the kind of world that his kids will be living in in the future, and it is important for him to make sure that he does his part in making a change.
